Ingredients

Scale

Butter and Seasoning

  • 12 tablespoons salted butter, softened and divided ( sticks)
  • ¾ teaspoon kosher salt, divided
  • ¾ teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon water

Burger Ingredients

  • 1 medium sweet onion, chopped
  • 1 pound 90% lean ground beef
  • 4 slices American cheese
  • 4 homemade burger buns, toasted

Instructions

  1. Caramelize Onions: In a skillet over medium heat, melt 4 tablespoons of the butter. Add the chopped sweet onion and 1 tablespoon of water along with ½ teaspoon of kosher salt. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the onions are soft and caramelized, approximately 10-15 minutes. Set aside.
  2. Prepare Patties: In a mixing bowl, gently combine the ground beef with the remaining ¼ teaspoon kosher salt and ground black pepper. Form into four equal-sized patties, slightly larger than the buns to account for shrinkage during cooking.
  3. Cook Patties: Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium-high heat. Add 4 tablespoons of butter and allow it to melt and foam. Place the patties in the skillet and cook for about 3-4 minutes on one side. Flip the patties and add 1 tablespoon butter on top of each patty to melt as they cook another 3-4 minutes for medium doneness.
  4. Add Cheese: During the last minute of cooking, place a slice of American cheese on each patty. Cover the skillet with a lid or foil to help the cheese melt evenly.
  5. Toast Buns: While the patties cook, slice and toast the homemade burger buns in a separate pan or toaster until golden brown.
  6. Assemble Burgers: Spread some of the caramelized onions on the bottom half of each bun. Place the cheesy butter burger patties on top, spoon additional melted butter from the pan over the patties if desired, and cover with the top half of the bun.

Notes

  • Using salted butter adds a nice depth of flavor but adjust the salt accordingly if using unsalted butter.
  • For juicier burgers, avoid overhandling the meat when forming patties.
  • Homemade buns add a rustic touch but any soft, sturdy bun will work well.
  • Caramelizing onions slowly enhances their sweetness and flavor.
  • Feel free to add your favorite toppings such as pickles, lettuce, or mustard for customization.
